          sign of police activity barely
          6 blocks from the Fulton

Christmas Day, 1997

I saw the figure 5
in gold. On a silver
earring on a young

punk. Who was able to
push the limit I thought
was no longer pushable.

& whose girlfriend ran
like a person who hasn't
ran anywhere since she

was 6. On my way to the
train to Bill Lluoma's
sister's in-laws for X-Mass

Buffer. & it woud have
gone unheeded, had I not
seen the same earring

again on the same youth.
On the train home.

      More than 1/4 Mile
                for Rod Smith
      The chairs the League
      of Justice (which over-
      look Buttermilk* Channel
      & Governor's Island) sit in
      have been decorated for X-
Mass & I can see their
      lights from the Brklyn
      Bridge, & now realize
      that the Empire State
      Building should be vis-
      able from here. when I
look for it, lit of late (by
      Lenora Helmsley) in green
      & red for the Holiday
Season, I see it has gone
      dark.
(*I do not know why it is called Buttermilk
      Channel. However, my experience with
buttermilk is rather limited, & when compared
with those from the 17th century who named
      this passage, very limited indeed.)
My choices are always indirect &
          the least likely to succeed.

But I am happiest when I'm alone &
there's no one to object that this

          "Makes no sense whatsoever."

For the more Convienient Convayience

On the wall under the domed mall of the south
wing of the Manhattan Boro Hall, a sign reads:

These bicycle stands have been placed here by
the City of New York for the convenience of
the cycling public. However, the City is not
responsible for any damage to or loss of bicycles
or personal property.

There are neither bicycles nor bicycles stands in sight.

Teardrop shaped white flowers
with 3 papery external petals
& 3 leafy internal petals, grow

among the ivy in the most pretentious
part of the park. They smell vaguely

like freesias in the middle of the
night, as the temperature dips
into the low 40's.

As I move away from Castle Clinton
originally completely surrounded by
water, toward New Jersey, I see a plack,
in front of absolutely nothing at all,
which reads "Peter Corsan Alberti
first Italian settler landed in N.Y.
June 2, 1653 through the efforts of
john N. LaConte founder of the Italian
Historical Society of America June 2
has been proclaimed 'Alberti Day'"
Memory War

They've created a disney land effect
in lower Manhattan. It is too late

& there is no stopping them. They've
even put up a sign to make it seem

more 'like' N.Y. Welcome to Robert F.
Wagner Jr. Memorial Park. & on

the side of an ancient building—
Historic Pier A. This historic pier,

built in 1886, will soon undergo a
comprehensive rehabilitation. Schedualed
to re-open in 1998, Pier A will accomidate
excursion vessels, water front reasturants

& catering spaces, a visitor center, &
retail shops. Thus returning it to its

original functions. "Appear—Disappear"
& I wonder when will they remove the
Korean War Memorial?
